No more buyouts?

In an earlier article, we mentioned the buyout of Jim Beam by Suntory Holding, however further news of buyouts may become rare. Assuming this deal goes through as scheduled, there is a lack of small companies left to buyout. Several other companies also had their eyes on acquiring Beam Inc., including Diageo, the world’s largest distiller. Conglomerate companies now control a wide range of liquors, boiling the market down to only a few real choices. Between the big four (in order):  Diageo, Pernod, Suntory, and Brown-Forman, only a few smaller groups exist.

However, a few potential future buyouts could still be made. For example Campari, a private family owned business holding the Skyy Vodka and Wild Turkey labels, and Bacardi, (who owns Grey Goose and Bombay), could each be bought out in the near future, but it is not likely. Besides those two, the marketplace seems to be locked into the big four, with many private tiny groups who typically are not willing or able to sell. On the other hand, the deal with Suntory could still fall through. The contract has a very low termination fee, and with other companies showing interest Beam might decide to back out for a better deal. If the deal does go through, the liquor market might become relatively static in the near future.
